New Releases that I highly recommend!

If you're a fan of 70's progressive rock, you'll love Opeth's new release 'Heritage'. No more death metal vocals on this release, which has pissed off some of their hard core death metal fans. I'm a bit fonder of Mikael's cleaner vocals though. In True Opeth fashion, this is a very different CD from anything they've done before. There's a warmth that screams to have this played on vinyl. Sounds alot like Richie Blackmore, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, etc with some bouts of jazz fusion. It's still Rock, and sometimes heavy.

Another one of my favorite Artists has just released the 1st ever album to be released on blu ray 5.1 surround sound, Steven Wilson's 'Grace for Drowning'. This is his 2nd solo release. Steven Wilson (porcupine tree, bass communication, no man, and blackfield) has produced many albums and has a few grammy's. Oddly enough still not many are farmiliar with his music. This new release is a more grandios production than other releases. Seems to be a bit more Jazz infused with 'Grace for Drowning'. I love pretty much anything this guy puts out, especially the Porcupine Tree cd's 'Fear of a Blank Planet', 'In Absentia', 'Stupid Dreams', and my all time fave, 'Deadwing'. For full impact, all these titles are available in DVD audio formal.

Others to check out: OSI (supergroup formed of members of Fates Warning, Dream Theater, members from porcupine tree, and Opeth frontman) very interesting stuff here.
Also, if you do like the heavier stuff, check out Florida's own TRIVIUM. The're what I would call polished death metal with the growls AND clean vocals.
Marilyn Manson's new Disc 'Born Villain' due out in abouta month. Not majorly crazy about what I've heard so far, but MM takes a lil while to sink in sometimes. I did like his last release, 'The High End of Low' when not many others did. Then again, thats just me, so I'll leave you with this.

New Tune from Opeth Heritage 'Devil's Orchard'

I'm so damn stoked about this CD. I love the warm 70's analogue feel of the song and the elimination of the typical death metal growls. Will be at the House of Blues here in Orlando on Oct 1 to finally see one of my favorite bands live.

'Remainder the Dog' full song from "Grace for Downing"

This is another release I'm anxiously awaiting. On Sept 20 Steven Wilson releases his 2nd solo album on Blu Ray 5.1 surround format. While I'd love to obtain a copy of the Deluxe released -double cd plus bonus cd  of outtakes and rareties, the blu ray disc and a hard bound book (only 5000), the price of $89. is a bit steep. I can see this going for $200 or more in just a few months on ebay, so its not a bad investment. Anyways, I love  this track and can't wait to hear it live Nov 8 at HOB!

Sneak preview of 'Track One' from 'Grace for Drowning' blu ray album.

If you like tool, you'll love this polish band.

Memories In My Head I've been listening to these guys for a few months now and I can't stress how amazing  their music is. They're from Poland and they kinda sound like tool with a European twist. All their music is great, but I think I like their chill laid back tracks the best. The lead singer is one of the most amazing bass players I've ever head; right up there with buckethead and primus. Their 'Reality Dream Live' DVD is in constant rotation in my player! 'Rapid Eye Movement' is my favorite CD of theirs. Thier latest release, 'Memories in my Head' is a mini album containing 3 11 minute songs that was released as a 10th anniversary surprise while on tour. I swear, these guys should do movie soundtracks.

Please...STOP!

For a slight twist of humorous irony I'm gonna step on my soapbox here to slap down some from their soapbox. I'm sick of these whinning rockstar wannabes about being oh-so broke and supressed. Rich people and the government are not responsible for your failures. You are! While I do agree that there things wrong with the government and the corporate world, that is another issue. For the most part, 90% of us are responsible for our financial situation and where we are in life. I'm broke as hell, but I'm not blaming my boss, god, the government, or sucessful people. I take full responsibility. So, shut up and deal or take some action. Once the bitterness is put behind, the hope of moving on should prevail. Do you really want your identity to be this?

been reading....

Basic Magick: A Practical Guide I've had this book for a while now and have skimmed over it. Just started really reading it in the past few days. No hocus pocus or mumo jumbo, just a scientific look at the brain, thought, and how to communicate with the subconscious to really progress in life. It's not what the average person may think it is. Its a practical guide. I suggest everyone read it or at least something along these lines. Forget what anyone says about life and how to live it. Decide for yourself. Common sense and an aventurous open mind is all we need!

I'm gonna get a bit philosophical here...

I've been reading and researching some pretty 'way out there' topics in the past 24 hrs -don't ask my why this obsession just suddenly manifested with such intensity- and I'm even more convinced of beliefs that I've had all along. All Religion, Faiths, Spirituality, and prayer are based on the SCIENCE of Belief, Thought, and Emotion. In this current state of society, I think we're all looking for answers, peace, and a way to the bigger picture of existence. I firmly believe that the 2012 thing isn't the end but a new beginning of a higher consciousness of humanity, the world we live in, and beyond.

New Piece Skitzo! A better scan

I started on this round midnight last night and pretty much by 6 am this is what I have. Its been years since I've done work this fast. I really felt like I was back in my college days in Atlanta. Get outta work, go home and work all night with jegermeiter shots and pot.  Not that I do any of that stuff anymore. Sometimes the knife would start to flow, and by the time the piece was done, I've had only a vague recollection of the process.   Not sure whether this is done...I'm 95% it is but we never really know these things.

Addiction taken to obsessive heights...

The Downward SpiralAs, most of you know, I'm an obsessive audiophile. I got a surround sound system for christmas, and I've now gotten into DVD Audio. WOW! You haven't heard your favorite music the right way until you've heard it in 5.1 surround sound on DVD. There's been a few titles out for about 10 years now and is slowly catching on. I've gotten a few CD's that come with the DVD Version. Some titles can cost you upwards of $75 a pop, but some great deals can be found on ebay or amazon. I got NIN the Downward Spiral Factory sealed on the way for $15 from ebay. One great one is the Metallica Black Album. Rock is just now coming around but Jazz titles have been big sellers for years. Happy hunting!

Diet and Fat....the good fun phat!

For all of you out there health conscious but are unwilling to settle for the tree huggin' diet; I got something for ya. After watch a ducumentary follow-up to 'Super-Size Me', I did some diggin' myself and foud that a moderate 'Atkins' diet along with a raw veggie diet can work. While these processed fats or oils are marketed as healthy, they fail to mention that these fats are tampered with. You can't just squeeze corn oil from corn. You have to tamper with it in a lab so to speak. But untampered animal fat is healthy for the body. In moderation it allows to body to burn the sugar from the starches of whole grains. You have to eat A LOT of green raw veggies to burn the carbs of potatoes, wheat, and rice. But with a hamburger or steak, or pork, or chicken you can eat a small amount to burn those starches.

So substitute that 2nd slice of whole wheat toast with your eggs with a 1/2 inch slab of 'queso de frier cheese' and add mega flavor to your meal. It's a minimal fat FRYING cheese that can elevate a meal in flavor and elegance with minimal pounds and miles on the treadmill to your day. You can fry the hell outta this stuff and add great flavor and texture to a meal. I just found a recipe for it...Pan fry a 1/2 inch slab of this and cover with a fried egg or two, over 1 slice of whole wheat bread...slap some of your favorite hotsauce on it and have a fruit bowl along with it and you got a breakfast with tons of flavor that will carry you a few hours further that a bowl of cereal! or fry a few 'queso de frier' cheese sticks and dip in marinara or salsa verde...Now thats decadent!

Film and musical transport....

We all know that great music takes us to great times in out past, but what about music AND film taking us to farmiliar places we've never been?  Or don't recall? Before I went to the Netherlands, I had been listening to a band from Holland called 'The Gathering'.  Their music conjured up images, and feelings of being in a place I'v never been before. I stepped off a train from the Amsterdam airport to central Amstedam and finally understood it. I know what you're saying...Amsterdam...drugs, and all those legal things that are taboo here in the States are the factor. No. Before stepping into a 'Cafe' at 8am I felt it!

And what about movies? Every now and then I'll come across a movie that I get the same feeling from. Whether its a scarry movie or a romantic comedy, sometimes I feel a glimpse of a point in time I haven't gotten to yet or even a point in time I've missed.  Kind of like missed by a few minutes, hours, or days that have changed the course of everything thats proceedes after those moments. I know, I'm sounding a lil crazy...But even those of you who've buried away the part of you that somehow understand this...understand this.

For example, a movie titled 'Mothman Prophecies' which is based on actual documented sightings from a few key places all over the world, has a very physiological and mental affect on me. I can't explain it. There has always been a futuristic farmiliararity I've felt when whatching this favorite of mine.   Yes, It could be my inate mind of splitting and reading way too much...or?  My point isn't my over thinking, but those crazy possibilies that roam all our brains and that there possibly is validity...

True art; film, music, paintings, food, or what the hell ever, is a glimpse of future past and present.

Fuck the conservatives that want to spend more on the football program than the art program...it took an artist to figure out that competetive sports were important too.

A Swiss Week..

For the past month I've been a good boy. After my 41st birfday party and seeing the BS drama some of my younger friends brought to the gathering, I raised a proverbial eye brow to where I should be at 41 and still managed to not given the finger to those that might deserve it.
I just  sat  back and was the neutral  fine Swiss Absinthe spirit I should be and   learned a few things. I let a situation that I put myself in the middle of, be worked out by the two dumbass' parties that are to blame,  without me even having to do or say a damn thing. And, I didn't even have to restrain from being ME! I just let others be themselves without too much judgment.
I found myself serving jury duty today and going against much advise of pretending to be a bigot, a religious fanatic, or a narrow minded, I managed to get dismissed as a juror while being 100% myself and being straight forward about the topics at hand, and somehow became one of a few courthouse rockstar heroes! Who says you can't have keg and drink it all?
Think I'm gonna have another Heiny with my home fries and wings before starting some new art!

Artistic Block

I sit here, a little happier; an old friend from the hood came by and spread some cheer. I've gotten into the whole creation of my own channel on youtube. My creative ability has always relied upon others creativity. That of great music! Yes this blog at this point is mainly about the other creativity that I experience of others. Bout the only actual drawing or painting I've done is that at work, so as much as people can annoy me, my only creative outlet has been at work or in the kitchen with food. Thank god, I've got work coming in.

But, musically, I've been obsessed, as any regular readers of this blog have noticed, with a band from Sweden  called Opeth for about 6 months now. Through watchin  some interviews with the mastermind of this band, Mikael Akerfeld,  I've checked out some of his favorite music and one I'm really loving is the guy who produced their classic, breakthrough album, Blackwater Park, Steven Wilson. This lad started such projects as Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, and a few others. WOW! Now this guy creates some great ambient music to get your creative groove back up and running.  After watchin some videos on youtube I've got some great imagery goin' on in my head for some art.

Not sure how many other artists are this way, but I think I'd sacrifice a few other senses NOT to have to loose the sense of hearing. If I couldn't hear music, I'd deffinitely have offed myself by now. Its one of the few things that gives me fire for life. It fuels my art. It fuels me to go out and get exercise. It fuels me to live. Yeah, I know, I sound like an addict!

Bored in Alabama...

I sit here in my truck... A cocktail and some tunes. Charging my phone. Damn this sounds pathetic but I've heard much worse for those visiting "Home". Tonight there are no stars. My favorite chef Ed from Top Chef didn't win. Should I rub one off or just crank up the tunes? Oh, the delima! The few here I'm still talkin to here aren't reachable and the others...well, I think they think I think I'm better than them for escaping here. They don't return emails. If they're too proud to even say hello, I guess I am better than them. Home could be so much better if people here had the ability to communicate. Holland is lookin so much better and better every minute I think about my next getaway.

finally in Montgomery...

Panama City. Andalelusa. Finally home. A few jonny walker blacks. Some great southern home cookin. I step out back for a smoke and look up to the heavens no matter where I am as I so often do and see more stars than I normally do. I can see the depth. I see that some are closer to me and some are farther away. Whenever I do this, I am reminded how small I really am. I'm confronted with my mortality yet I'm awakened to how big and astounding existance really is. As much as I run from and deny my home, it is here where the bigness and unlimited boundaries of all things seem to simplify. Only a year ago I lay on my back here on a trampoline with a female friend, and we witnessed 10 shooting stars that night. Looking up will always keep out miniscule perspectives in check and remind us of the things important to us and the things we take for granted.

Saw A Great Movie Last Night...

Green Zone (Exclusive Special Edition)If you like mystery, suspense, and combat, you gotta see Green Zone. I love the movie. As I get older, I appreciate war and historical movies more and more. It's a great glimpse into just how fucked up things can get during war, and how blurred objectives can get. I'll say no more. See it.
Interesting Fact: Most of the soldiers you see are not actors but are real soldiers who served in Iraq.

Dribble.

Offended at PRIDE ROCK Today!

Hello Yall! After a long, hot day at Animal Kingdom, I site before you with a biscuit, mix greens, tunes, and an $8.99 12 pack of Corona! Ahhhh. Don't have to work til 6pm tomorrow so I feel a creative night ahead! A post, some drawing, surfing, and beers! And later for the munchin' hour, A new addiction will only do...Blue Cheese Burger with hot sauce! Had one at the Cast Lunch Spot today and decided one just won't do.

While enjoying my 'tasty burger', I overheard a conversation about being 'Offended' about something someone said. Folks, let me say...Stop being a damn pussy! Shit, taking something offensive, is a choice you make. Being offended is a part of life! Be pissed and move on. We have no right to ask someone to appologise for stating their mind to a few OR the masses. You hear the real shit when people supposedly speak offensive or controversial. wheather,'what someones says', IS truely offensive, or just you and the 6.5 other persons on the planet, FIND it offensive, is irrelevent! If you find people talking offensive..really listen. You'll learn something about yourself or the person ranting uncontrolably! Either way, just sit back, take a sip, and smile with a subtle, diabolical smile! You'll feel GOOD, not offended.

Cheers!

In the midst of watchin this I've got a 4 lb. pork marinating for 2 days, A doggy stipple portait I'm starting, and About to watch the Iron Maiden concert film, Flight 666, before the new episode of Top Chef.

Opeth - In My Time Of Need

Austin City Limits Festival on Palladia Channel

After rebooting my HD cable box, I'm now finally accessing all the HD channels and let me tell ya, the picture is beautiful. The picture on the LED screens are so friggin amazing. The colors and contrast are richer and brighter, and concerts in HD or on DVD demonstrate this well.

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2005Channel surfin' brought me to the Palladia channel featuring performances from the Austin City Limits Music Festival. In just the past hour I've seen some phoenomenal performances from bands  Dave Mathews Band, The B 52's, and some I've vaguly, or never heard of. This is the largest anual music festival in North America. -OK, some band from NY is on now, and, well...I'm not diggin this performance. I guess someone is or they wouldn't be on stage,- Anyways, all you music geeks, tune in!

Now, I've gotta serious concert craving goin on. Too bad there's no great shows here in Orlando anytime soon. Anyone fancy a trip to Europe? There's great concerts every block on that side of the pond.

Sketchbook dribble

Yes, finally some art. scanner's in a tight spot so I had to do the snapshot thing, but here's some sketchbook stuff. Some have been posted in a FB Album already, some not. I am creating a page specifically for sketchbook posts. Actually 2 pages. One for the 'Really Risque' stuff, and another for the other. I like people to have to option to see the RR stuff, or the option to avoid it. Nothing like lookin at a puppy portrait, then...BOYNG! A crotch shot right in the face!

Dexter Season 4 DVD...

After sleeping late for a change, and a full afternoon breakfast -I've never been a breakfast person- I'm finally gettin close to the end of  Dexter Season 4.  Of course I used to never be a Television person either.  This show just keeps getting better. The writing is awsome, the characters are awsome, and this season there's plenty of surprises, twist, and turns.

Dexter: The Fourth SeasonI just love crime shows, but this isn't like, the CSI's or Law and Orders. Those, for me, are about the thrill of how they put the pieces together, they finding out 'Who Dun'it', but this show is about so much more. A person with an uncontrolable urge to kill  protects society with that urge. Having a family of his own now puts a new intersting twist on Dexter's modivation and understanding of his urge or  his 'Dark Passenger' as he calls it. Throughout the series, theres been the underlying theme of how family , upbringing, and experiences as children can determine who we are as adults.  Along with father issues from many of the caracters,  this seems to be the backbone of season 4.  I could be reading into this a bit much because of my own issues with dad, and my childhood experiences, but the theme is there. No need to worry people, I may be a little odd at times, but I'm no serial killer; gory movies don't even do it for me.

John Lithgow is the guest star in this season, and as usual, he's great. Another plus of this DVD set is the bonus features. Episodes 1 and 2 of the long awaited season 3 of Californication- another show I'm hooked on.

The Gathering - Amity

Homemade tortillas Dude!

Yeah, I told ya I'd be back, for the .18  person readin' this. My opinion still holds for Breaking Bad, but It got me craving my new drug...THIS! I'm goin for marathon round two of the Tunes. More Swedish Opey but the CD changer is on random with some KISS Alive II, Mercyful Fate, Soundtrack to Lost Highways, and Sade in between. I told you my tastes in tunes are Various and I'm just gettin' warmed  up. Speaking of warmed Beavis and Mrs. Stewart...I've gotta tell you about these Fried Catfish Tacos I made earlier! Healthy is good in between Hot Wings and Pizza!

Get 2 cups of flour
1.5 Tsp (Teaspoons not Table spoons) of bakin powder...You do have some you just don't know it!
1    Tsp Salt...
put all 3 in a bowl

get another bowl and put a little short of a cup of WARM H20 (water)
and 2 Tsp of oil...veggie, olive, canola, peanut...OIL! in the bowl with the water

SLOWLY  add the H20 and oil mix to the dry goods as you mix, stir, or whatever (like a TBSP at a time)
Once it starts gettin all gooey and stuff, ball it all up and knead it. squeeze it, roll it. Use the palms of your hands to work it on the counter, or cutting board, or just something stable and flat! add a lil more flour to the surface if ya have to. That'll make it a lil less sticky. Once the dough is smoothe and in a ball, or you're just tuckered out, put the dough in a bowl and cover with a damp towel and let it just BE for about 20 minutes or so. Nows the time to fix another drink, have a smoke or change the death metal on the CD player to pat boone or that self help book on audio... or vice verca.

After the 20, get a lil nib (pinch) of the dough and roll it into a ball round the size of a golf ball or a lil bigger if you wish. Do this with the rest and place on a plate for another 10 minutes and cover with that damp towel. If ya wanna wait a lil longer, thats fine, just make sure the towel remains smewhat damp.

When you get hungry, cut an eye of the stove on to medium- a lil below medium-  with a skillet of some sorts. Or if you have a Tortilla press/tortilla cooker, well, you've just made your taco's, quesadillas, etc meet your mouth alot faster! Flatten the balls in the pan or tortilla press and let cook for no more that about 30 sec to a min (on each side if in a skillet). Place 'em on a plate in between some damp paper towels till ready to fill, stuff, or whatever.

There, you've got some DAMN good tortillas for just about anything. Great for absorbing those few extra cocktails you had while preparing them. They'll be good for a few days as long as you put them in a zip lock back with a damp towel or two. When you need'em just zap in the microwave for about 15-25 seconds. sprinkle with a lil water before zapping with make sure they're soft. I know this might sound like a lot of work to some, but, its really not. You'll be dissappointed with the store bought after you do these though. They're good even by themselves with some salsa and/or cheese if you're lazy or in a hurry...I'm leaving what to stuff them with up to you...Next time, Corn Tortillas! They're even easier!

Takin a break from the tunes for some Breaking Bad!

Breaking Bad - The Complete First SeasonAfter about, oh,  I don't know 6 or 7 scotch and waters, 10 CD's, and hours in front of the laptop- and I'm still here, got discs 3-4 of Breaking Bad  from Netflix in today and I figured its digital TV time. Have you guys seen this show? It's taken about 4 episodes to get spun...Not Bad.  The show toggles from funny, depressing, to downright nose drouling.  Once you get past the Dad from Malcolm in the Middle as a cancer riddled meth cook, it's a decent show. I haven't seen enough to start defending the anti-hero's of this public broadcast, but give it enough time, and I'm sure I will. Like most shows of this nature, you'll see the good guys- reality being served- that are wrapped up in the underbelly of society, the degenerates that grandma wouldn't even  second guess as scum of the earth, witty debautery that she would laugh at within the same breath, and the questionable fictional stance of the writers...

It's entertaining whatever you take from the show. Positive for the shelterted shut-in, negative, possibly for the newely clean, or newly self indulgent. I'm sure I'm really ranting now, so I'll end THIS post! Coming up next...homemade tortillas= tacos...gimme half an hour and I'll distract you from the pipe, or whatever, with a recipe for Beavis and Butthead Cuisine!;D

Gene Would Approve!

I've posted this on Facebook, but here it is again for those of you not on there. Yes, I'm guilty of being over excited about gettin my 1st decent amount of bucks for caricature work outside of  Caricature Connection (the people that call me to do these at Disney/Rat World). Hoping to do more! My accountant- Dirty Ol' man and a great guy- asked for a caricature of him...surrounded by boobs with his tongue hangin' out like Gene Simmons. He came to the right person for this one! When he said that, I just had this vision of him standing in the midst of Boobland, with clouds of boobs in the background! This was alot of fun and gave me the confidence of doin' caricatures in the home studio...for profit!

Opeth...The New Extreme Metallica with big Diversity!

Ok, all you who know me, know how obsessed I can get over music, and I tell you, I have found my new Favorite band...I'm a gutter slut strung out on this music! Opeth is a Swedish band thats been around for about 20 years. As a matter of fact they've been doin all sorts of cool stuff to celebrate their 20 year anniversary. I could get into all the details but the music has, and is first.

Opeth - In Live Concert At The Royal Albert Hall (2DVD/3CD)I've never been into extreme metal, such as the bands with the 'Gutteral' growling vocals -aside from King Diamond who goes to both extremes, but thats another rant.  But sthis guy does it right and he can sing as well. I initially got interested from checking out their CD Damnation from the public library. Funny, eah! This is the CD where they went totally melow doing a dark, european folk  album if you will.  Really an amzing album which got them a much bigger audience. Smart fuckers they are.  I Then I got into their harder stuff.

If you can only appreciate this band for one thing, it would have to be their musicianship. They mix, heavy metal with bouts of classical, folk, and jazz. About the only genre that you'll NEVER hear from these guys is hip-hop! Pogressive metal at its finest!  I just got in today a repackage collection of  three of their early albums, The Candlelight Years ,which are pretty amazing considering the rawness and...well, less diverse vocals compared to their last few efforts.
In just a few short months I've created quite a collection of Opeth Cd's and DVD's, but I'd have to say my  two favorite CDs of their's would have to be Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries.  Their last studio release, Watershed, at first sounded over produced and pretentious to me, but now is growing on me. There's definitely more jazz infused with this CD.  But don't be fooled, it's heavy as hell as well. I just pre-ordered their 3rd Live release Live at the Royal Albert Hall - due out Sept 17th- which comes in 3 different variations; A regular 2 disc set, A 5 disc set, (the Full 3 CD audio Concert and the 2 DVD film of the show), and a deluxe lmt. Edition set...the 5 disc set plus the Vinyl Edition and collectors booklet. I got the 5 discs on the way!
Damnation
If you like metal, you'll love Opeth. If  you're one that loves great music, no matter what genre it is, you'll like and appreciate it. Every CD they release they do something different and take the music to another level. I  hear a heavy influence of Deep Purple/Rainbow, along with  Pink Floyd and Metallica!
